    Book details

The Red River flows through the former mining area of Camborne-Redruth in Cornwall. This was once the major metalliferous mining area of the world. As a consequence of its role in metal extracting activitiesit is said to be the most altered river in the U.K.. Before this the valley was inhabited from the pre-Bronze Age through the Iron Age, Roman and Medieval times up until the present day. This book covers information on all these aspects as well as the Natural History. There is also an account of noteworthy people who have lived in the valley. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, many historic and not seen before. There is a comprehensive bibliography and set of references.Paul Williams, a Cornishman. has known the area all his life. He has written an engagingand attractive book.

Professor Hilary Paul Williams was brought up by a tributary of the Red River, close to the main river. He has spent much of his childhood and adulthood exploring it. Many of his ancestors lived and worked in, and close to, the valley. He knows it intimately. After his education in local primary schools and Redruth Grammar School he read Mathematics at Cambridge University followed by a PhD in Mathematical Logic at Leicester University. During vacations he worked at the mining service company of Holmans and on a tin dredger carrying out extraction and examination of tin bearing sand, sucked up from the sea bed in St Ives bay.Professor Williams worked in industry and academia before his retirement. He has held chairs in three major universities, latterly at the London School of Economics where he is now an Emeritus Professor. He has a house near Helston and still walks and explores the Red River Valley. Paul Williams is a member of the Royal Institution of Cornwall and the Cornwall Archaeological Society.
