'And who will teach us when you are gone, Mr. Barber?' asked Norman, dolefully. 'You all know the Gospel--God's good tidings,', said the curate, not directly answering his words, but his thought. 'Millions of heathen children have never heard the name of Jesus, and are growing up in the practice of all iniquity: and each one of these millions has a soul of, more worth than the universe! Are you not willing that I should try and teach some of them, even though I must leave off teaching you? Let this be a little contribution from your feelings to the work among the heathen boys.' They smiled in return to his smile: but went out of the schoolroom in twos and threes, gloomily talking over his going away, and not liking it in the least: except one tall, idle boy, the spoiled child of a widow lady in the village, who had constantly been getting into trouble about his unprepared lessons, and felt secretlypleased at the departure of his monitor.
